Major water projects almost ready - Govt

The government has said it expects to accomplish implementation of water projects in Momba and Tunduma districts, Mbeya Region to improve supply of safe and clean water by July 2014 as pledged by President Jakaya Kikwete.

President Kikwete had promised residents of the two districts improved supply of clean and safe water in 2005 and 2010 during the general election campaigns.

Speaking in Parliament yesterday, Deputy Minister Prime Minister’s Office (Regional Administration and Local Government), Aggrey Mwanri said to accomplish President Kikwete’s promise, the government has been setting aside a budget for implementation of various water projects over the course of the past financial years since 2011/2012.

Mwanri was responding to a question raised by David Ernest Silinde (Mbozi West, Chadema) who had wanted to know when the promise made by President Kikwete during the general elections campaign will be accomplished considering that his term is due in two years.

The MP said President Kikwete had promised to address water woes in the two districts once elected President.

Mwanri said in a bid to address water woes among the residents, in 2011/2012 and 2012/2013 the government saw the construction of water projects in Namtambalala, Chilulumo and Iyendwe in the districts under a Water and Village Environmental Cleanliness programme at a tune of 748.1m/-. He said projects are expected to be completed in June this year and serve almost 14,399 residents.

He said for 2013/14 water projects for Itumbula and Mnyuzi are being implemented at a cost of 546.8m/- and expected to be completed in July this year.

The deputy minister further said for 2013/14 the government set aside 184.5m/- for water projects in Tunduma town noting that:

“The amount was injected in the construction and rehabilitation of water infrastructures as well as expansion of a water channel which distributes water to almost 3,896 people. The ministry has also completed assessment of a huge water project which will approximately cost 22bn/-.”

For Momba district, the deputy minister said the new district has been included in the Big Results Now initiative with two water projects of Kamsamba at a cost of 1.0bn/ and one in Chitete valued at 8.0bn/- will be implemented to solve water problems at the headquarters of the district which is Chitete as well as in other areas.

“On top of that, for 2014/15 financial year, 440.0m/- has been set aside for the municipality for implementation of water projects under the Water and Village Environmental Cleanliness programme,” said Mwanri.

He emphasized that the government will continue to implement various water projects across the country as per the availability of funds, noting that the government is working closely with the People’s Bank of Germany (KFW) to bankroll such projects.
