The government has expressed commitment to improve community health facilities across the country in a bid to achieve millennium development goal four and five that target to reduce child death and improve maternal health respectively.
This was said by Minister of Health and Social Welfare Dr Seif Rashid when speaking to the World Lung Foundation, Chief Executive Officer Peter Baldini in his office, yesterday in Dar es Salaam.
According to the Minister, the government seeks to expand the capacity of Heath facilities by 50 percent and improve service delivery.
The minister hailed the world lung foundation for initiating a program to renovate public health institutions and thus improve health service delivery and reduce death amongst expectant women.
"Its contribution has been very critical," the Minister said identifying that WLF through its revocation program in Kigoma for instance had enabled health facilities to undertake surgeries, train health welfare workers and improve infrastructures at the facilities.
Peter Baldini, WLF Executive Officer confirmed that the program had contributed to improved health care and treatment among several public health facilities in the region noting that more than 100 health and welfare workers, nurses, midwives and clinical officers were trained under the initiative supported by the New York based Bloomberg Philanthropies.
Dr Nguke Mwakatunda, the WLF Country Director detailed the scope of the project saying it is implemented in three regions, Morogoro, Coast and Kigoma.
He said before the project was commissioned, maternal health provision was very poor and indicators were extremely high.
He said as of now, the death toll has reduced by 20 percent while referral cases have also gone down by 16 percent.
"They had no family planning, the rate of expectant women delivering at home was also escalating but now there are major improvements," said Dr Mwakatunda.
"The foundation is strengthening service delivery making them much more effective," he summed up.
