Juma Mwambusi’s new emerging forces finished second in Group B with Kenyan giants AFC Leopards winning the top spot while Academie Tchite of Burundi held on to their third place Mainland envoys Mbeya City will face SC Victoria University of Uganda in the quarter-finals of the CECAFA Nile Basin Cup after posting a barren draw with Rwanda’s Etincelles in their final group match on Wednesday. The result means Etincelles crashed out of the tournament. They needed to win with a big margin against Mbeya City and pray that AFC Leopards defeated Academie Tchite in the other match of the group. The quarter-final pairings were decided on Wednesday night at the end of the Nile Basin Cup group matches at the Khartoum Stadium and Shandi City. CECAFA Secretary General Nicholas Musonye told Goal that the quarter-final pairings show that AFC Leopards will take on Defence of Ethiopia, while hosts Al Merreikh face Academie Tchite. Al Ahly Shandi, another host team, will square up against Malakia of South Sudan. In Wednesday night’s other matches, AFC Leopards beat Academie Tchite 1-0, with substitute Bernard Mang’oli striking in the 83rd minute at Khartoum Stadium. Al Ahli Shandi beat Defence 2-0 and topped Group C that was based in Shandi City, two and a half hours drive North West of Khartoum. Finishing second, Defence became Leopards’ quarter-final opponents. The Nile Basin Cup is the brainchild of CECAFA and the Sudan Football Association (SFA). It is meant to give second or third placed teams in domestic leagues or runners-up in the Cup competition an opportunity to have a taste of competition across their borders. The winners of the tournament will get a total of USD 60,000 with the champion taking home half the amount and the runners up will get USD 20,000 while the third placed one will get USD 10,000.
